Review: The Similars

SPOILER DISCUSSION

1. If the old Indigenous women could communicate at least partially the whole time, why did she say nothing to the group about what she thought was going on? Her fear only added to the situation and I felt let down when she revealed that Ignacio was in fact talking with real aliens- not because that idea itself isn’t cool- but because her talking opened up a whole other can of worms.

2. I love that Gertrudis literally drugs her child to keep him in control. It feels like a commentary on how parents try and deal with issues in their own way as opposed to other methods and the problems that can cause. Granted, I don’t know if institutional support could stop Ignacio, so it might be a moot point, but I got a serious school shooter vibe from him. Like he has issues that warrant clear intervention (Gertrudis talks about how he promised he wouldn’t do “it” again), but they’re only suppressed, so when they they finally get released it’s too late to do anything.

3. Irene’s attempts at getting the group to look at the images in the other room was simultaneously funny and irritating. I get a group caught in a power struggle isn’t the easiest to get the attention of, but it almost feels like the movie intentionally wants to ignore the point until later. I don’t understand why it constantly got sidelined then brought up again. It was odd.
