Review: It Comes at Night

SPOILER DISCUSSION

1.I loved the way Travis interprets and navigates the world. He’s a teenager filled with hormones, but is trapped in a horrifying post-apocalyptic world where the smallest misstep can lead to death or worse-infection. It warps his perception of things and makes his nightmares/personal sequences really interesting to analyze by themselves. For example, Kim is the first women he meets outside of his mom in God knows how long. It’s not hard to understand why he would have sexual feelings for her. What makes it creepy is how his securitized mindset transforms that sexuality into something horrifying. Almost as if the unknown domain of sexuality is just as terrifying as the effects of the mysterious illness. It could also be that he thinks that she’s intentionally dropping hints so that she can corrupt him with the illness, almost as if he’s projecting his fathers sense of paranoia on the new neighbors. I personally like the first view more, but that’s the fun of the movie. There’s always somewhere to go.
