Review: Trick ‘r Treat

SPOILER DISCUSSION

1.The werewolf transformation scene involving Laurie and her sisters(?) is one I didn’t see coming at all. The early dialogue about virginity, the costumes, and the general convention makes it seem like the girls are trying to find dudes to have sex with. Then Laurie gets stalked by Wilkins as a vampire, who we just saw kill another girl earlier, which makes us think she’s going to die – another cliche checked off. Then we see the body fall which seems to confirm our expectations except it’s Wilkins and then everything suddenly clicks. She’s hunting him. Originally I thought she would really be a “vampire” but seeing her become a werewolf feels so much more fulfilling given the whole werewolf vs vampire motif in horror. It also makes her sisters “runt of the litter” comment a lot funnier in retrospect. Get it cuz dog jokes.

2. The scene where Rhoda and Sam just nod at each other gets me laughing every time. It’s like Sam is going “good job on killing all those kids now you can go home” and she’s just like “Yeah sounds good chief, I’ll see you next year”. Probably the biggest reason to enjoy Sam as a character. He’s not malicious and actually protects the one girl who follows the rules.

3. The way Kreeg’s candy bar falls and stops Sam’s lollipop-knife reminds of all those moments in movies where a character has some metal plate/medallion/etc in their pocket that miraculously protects them from some gunshot wound. It’s so much funnier watching a demi-God try and stab someone only to hit chocolate and take it as an offering. Kreeg’s confused expression makes the whole bit more than funny because he clearly cannot comprehend how and why such a powerful creature would let him go over something so small. Dude should’ve paid more attention to the rules.
