Review: Poltergeist (1982)

Spoiler Discussion

1. The funeral scene at the very beginning becomes more and more brilliant the more I think about it. Carol Anne quite clearly grieves over the loss of Tweety as evidenced by the longer funerary process. But her immediate, “Can I get a goldfish?” completely changes the moment. I laughed out loud and thought the scene really foreshadowed the disrespecting the dead “reveal” that came near the end of the movie.

2. The face melting scene and the clown scene both scared me a lot and in different ways. The former made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. It’s been a nightmare I’ve had in the past, but seeing it come to life on screen was something else. The clown scene was a well earned jump scare and had been teased for so long during the entire film, that I was constantly on edge whenever I saw it. Seeing it sneak up assassins-creed like behind the son was terrifying.

3. It’s my fault for never seeing this movie early on and now that I have I can truly appreciate how important it was for a lot of the horror movies I loved watching growing up. For example, Insiduous, follows so many of the same story beats – the child is “taken” by a dark force, the parents ask for the help of a team of supernatural experts, the expert is led by two more “pragmatic” members, and then they try to recover the child. It changes a lot of things up and has a much darker and sinister tone, but you can see the influence.
