Review: Halloween II

SPOILER DISCUSSION

1. I love how they kill off Laurie’s crush from the past movie in one of the most horrifying teen deaths I’ve seen on screen and literally everyone just drops it and moves onto the next death. The cop talking about how he couldn’t stop had me laughing. Like the kid is walking at 2 miles an hour and you’re bolting down the street in your car at 40. If the scene was set up properly I think it would’ve been genuinely horrifying. Instead, I couldn’t stop laughing at the aftermath.

2. I hate stuff like being helpless until just the right moment in a movie. It feels like lazy storytelling to force tension. Laurie calling out to Loomis and co when they enter the hospital irritates me to no end. She’s incapable of speaking and then literally the moment they enter she can scream? And somehow none of them hear her? Took me out of the moment.

3. I enjoy Loomis’s explanation of how we’re all scared of the dark inside ourselves. The discussion of druid priests fire rituals to appease gods foreshadows Loomis’s eventual fate in the flames (even if it is retconned in Halloween 4), sets up some nice connections for Halloween VI, and reinforces Michael’s role as some kind of unconscious representation of evil even if only slightly. If only the segue from that conversation didn’t immediately go into one of the laziest reveals ever – that Laurie’s actually Michael’s sister.Being such a defining moment of the franchise, you’d think it would’ve been revealed with more tact but it just gets thrown out there.
