Film Review: The Black Phone – 2022

SPOILER DISCUSSION

1.It’s mentioned that Finney and Gwen’s mother had supernatural gifts where were interpreted as mental health related issues. Gwen inherited these gifts in the form of her dreams and makes use of the visions.

When Finney picks up the phone, it’s revealed that he’s the only who’s been able to hear the voices. This seems like confirmation that also possesses supernatural gifts like his sister. At one point, his conversation on the phone transitions into one of Gwen’s dreams formally signifying that the powers share the same source

2.Robin is introduced with a brutal fight sequence where he bludgeons a bully’s face in. Later on, Vance (Brady Hepner) does something similar to the person who interrupted his arcade game. Both Robin and Vance are seen as the toughest persons at the school. They’re active agents who take charge of their lives.

When Finney finally takes down the Grabber, he bludgeons the latters face in much like Robin and Vance did. It’s a perfect encapsulation of the way he’s developed – he’s now an active agent.

His incarnation as the new “tough guy” is then recognized as word spreads through the school. Now the kids in the hallway look at him with a newfound respect. He affirms this change with a name change, going by “Fin”. Fittingly, the film “fin”ishes.
