SPOILER DISCUSSION
1.Jesse manages to run away from Johnny three separate times. The first time is when he’s playing a prank in the store. The second time is when he jumps onto the bus. The third time is when he runs off due to having to go back home. Johnny’s progression as a parent can be seen in how he responds to each situation. By the end of it, he’s attuned to his nephew’s needs and is able to respond in full to the emotional issues plaguing him.
2.The ending is perfect. Johnny’s persistent recording of events through the film turn out to be a recording of his and Jesse’s journey together, delivered to the latter as a gift to help him remember the journey. It also means that the movie proper is an encapsulation of a journey that’s become immortalized. All the shots, noises, descriptions, and conversations are now preserved forever in the form of C’Mon C’Mon. What a way to reinforce what the film is getting after.
3.There is a repetition of missing father figures in the narrative. Despite hearing about Johnny and Viv’s mother, we never hear anything about their father. For Jesse, his father is missing due to medical issues. In this sense, Johnny serves as a pseudo-father figure ; he’s helping to sure up the breeches in Jesse’s life.
This malleability is touched upon in an interview that Johnny has with a young man. The kid mentions that his father is in prison and that the event impacted him quite a lot. Consequently, the kid wants to ensure his little sister does not have to experience anything related to the same and is willing to act as father and/or brother to her to help ensure a stability is there. What motivates him is love for his family more than maintaining a certain role.
No review has ever made me want to watch a “plotless” movie as much as this one! Great insight!
