9/7/2021Updated second to last paragraph flow better and mention connection to Friedkin’s The Exorcist. Saw The Exorcist recently while writing a review for it and realized the nature of the spiritual ambiguity afforded within it was the same kind of feeling I had with First Reformed. Now that I’ve seen the connection, I can’t unsee it; more importantly, given my belief that The Exorcist is one of the greatest movies of all time, I think this makes the achievement of Schrader’s movie all the more easy to visualize.

  1. A pristine review from someone I have come to expect top-shelf writing from. The non-spoiler review was so well written, I had to go and read the spoiler section just to consume more of your thoughts. Then I watched the movie, and all that you have written was so elegantly presented to someone who doesn’t go much for movies out of the mainstream. Superb movie, even better review.

    1. Appreciate the kind words Mr.Ratner. Haven’t laughed this hard at a description of one of my reviews in a long while.
