Review: The Invitation

SPOILER DISCUSSION

1.Out of all the brilliant misdirects, the call with Choi is my favorite because of how many layers it relies on. It’s established that Choi is lazy and late so it makes sense why he hasn’t come up in so long. The cell signal is shown to be shoddy and imprecise so the lack of calls is understandable. When Will hears the message, I was so convinced that the cult had killed Choi in advance. When he came in, I was sure that Will was just an unreliable narrator who had heard the voicemail as part of a delusion. But despite that I yelled at the wine scene, just like Will, because something felt wrong, Just because Choi had shown up, doesn’t mean that he also hadn’t sent the message to Will. Maybe he was so lazy that instead of buying any desert, he created an elaborate story to get someone else to do the work. It makes sense given what we’re told, doesn’t ruin the logic of the story, and keeps the twist feeling earned. Genuinely brilliant storytelling.
