Leah’s friend who insults her about her wanting her mom dead literally had my eyes rolling. He attacks her at every step he can, and it’s baffling at how they’re all friends in the first place. Yes, her other friend makes a snide masturbation joke but that’s not the same as actively defending someone. I also kind of wish that Leah got really frustrated at the dude, creating an emotional hate anchor of some kind to him, so Pyewacket would want to kill him as well. Given the author’s explanation at the end, Leah’s a bridge with a servant to do her bidding, so the idea that he would constantly fulfill those actions of malice feels more interesting than what ended up happening. It would also give the themes more to play with, but oh well.
2. I think it’s poetic that she ends up killing her mom, but the steps taken to get there are almost laughable. The spirit doesn’t ramp up its game until she does her Skype call with the author , and then despite being warned that Pyewacket would play tricks on her senses, she goes back to the house instead of finishing the ritual. It just felt so formulaic.
