SPOILER DISCUSSION
1. I love how the movie ends. I knew Lily was scared, but the idea that she’d quite literally die from seeing a ghost is something else. It wasn’t what I expected, and I loved that it was done without a huge noise or jump. It made the experience feel wholly unique. The ending narration of her staying in the house and “lending it” is poetic and thematically poignant. It gives the spectral narration a purpose, so it feels earned and not just like a gimmicky narrative tool used to add poetic lines throughout the movie.
2. Mr.Waxcap’s refusal to explain the story to Lily irked me. It literally doesn’t make sense, besides just being a dick move. I get not wanting to spoil things for others, but she literally says she doesn’t like horror and would rather hear the spoiler on who Polly really was, so it doesn’t feel real that he would just ignore it and leave.
3. I wish Polly’s story was more developed. We barely get to see her and her relation to the house feels more like “horror element” than anything else. The brutal way she’s killed is just spectacle. I get wanting to show the way that events can just be random and the seemingly cruelty of a chaotic world, but it just didn’t hit the right notes with me.
