SPOILER DISCUSSION

1. The ending speech from Eron confused me. The movie tells us he’s a genius who can see through every move, but the scope of what he can do or why he’s doing it is unclear. Early on he’s confused that STEM can speak to Grey but during the finale, he reveals that STEM told him to pick Grey. Did he only assume STEM would talk to him? Seems unlikely given what we’re told about his genius. Even if we give him the benefit of the doubt, the moment he realized that STEM was exerting its own will, he should’ve put in some more safeguards.

Furthermore, he lets STEM out into the real world in a host it wants, but doesn’t manage to piece that the tech will come back for him, except he does? He indicates that the possibility of him making another STEM is reason enough to kill him, but that should’ve been obvious from the get go. It just didn’t work for me.

2. I wish the Fisk had his backstory more fleshed out. There are mentions early on when he’s taunting Asha (Melanie Vallejo) that imply some rich-educated/poor-uneducated dichotomy, but it never goes anywhere. I would have loved to see the idea of technology mapped to class and social relation , because the reveal that Fisk is the champion of the “upgraded” is a kind of mockery of the social order. Despite being near the bottom, he’s at the top because technology doesn’t belong to anyone or can be used in the same destructive ways by anyone. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
