Review: Friday the 13th Part 3

SPOILER DISCUSSION

1.I don’t think Chuck and Chili fit into the movie at all, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love the high-jinks they bring along (pun intended). In particular, I think I’ve chortled every at the scene of the group smoking weed, freaking out that they’re being chased by cops, making the genius decision to literally eat the weed, and then finally realizing the cops are going to the crime scene where Jason killed the farmers. It’s genuinely funny and is just one of the many times the movie presents a false scare before revealing it’s something else entirely.

2. I wish the movie spent time establishing Vera’s background a bit better. We get the bit with her family yelling at her and then nothing much afterwards which is a shame because her budding friendship with Shelley is my favorite part about the movie. Watching her realize there’s more to Shelley than his douchey sad exterior was nice and made her death at the hands of fake Shelley/Jason all the worse. This is one of the deaths I wish I got to see in actual 3D.

3. So I mentioned I enjoy that Jason is definitely evil in this movie. He definitely sexually assaulted Chris at a bare minimum and the way he flips up his mask to taunt her is trademark evil behavior.

Jason (Richard Brooker) taking off the mask.
Jason is definitely relishing torturing Chris all over again. The mocking removal of the mask confirms it.

However, this scene and the assault do indicate that Jason has been chilling near the lake for a long time and has the capacity to meaningfully act. He has motivations and takes pleasure in torturing Chris which feels like it goes against the childlike and stunted depiction of him from part II. It’s even weirder that Miner directed both parts, so the discrepancy should’ve been caught. I can only assume that this issue, like so many of the other issues that have plagued the franchise, is due to a lack of understanding of what Jason and where his character/the franchise should go.
